Canty signs with Tennessee State
When Jarvis Canty was just an infant, his mother, Medina, was given some very surprising news by her doctor. “The doctor thought he was going to be a midget,” Medina said. “He was so tiny and was growing so slowly that they actually thought he was a midget.” That doctor's prognosis was a little off kilter, as evidenced by Canty's 6-foot-6, 360-pound frame. “He really didn't start growing until he was in middle school,” Medina said. “But once he started he never did stop.” That size, combined with quick feet and hard work in the classroom, led Tennessee State to offer Canty a football scholarship last weekend. Canty accepted, and officially signed with the Tigers on Wednesday morning. Tennessee State, an NCAA Division I school in Nashville, Tenn., became aware of Jarvis through tapes that Great Falls coach Kenneth Schofield sent around. What really piqued the school's interest, Schofield said, was Canty's performance at the North/South All-Star game. “A game like that is really a great showcase for young men,” Schofield said. “And how a player practices is just as important as how he plays. In all-star contests, players rotate in and out so much that the best chance to get an extended look at a young man is in practice.” Of course, that wasn't much of an issue for Canty, who played every snap of the game on the offensive line. “They put him at the money tackle (left tackle) position in the shotgun, and he did so well against high caliber players that they left him in there for the whole game,” Schofield said. The signing of a scholarship represented a big day for not only Canty and his family, but also for the school as a whole. “Jarvis is the first Division I signing we've had at Great Falls since Tori Barber signed to play for The Citadel several years ago,” Great Falls High School principal Howard Rheiner said. “This is a full ride and includes books, tuition, room and board. We're proud of what Jarvis has done on the field, but we're also proud that he is going to a school that has been rated in U.S. News and World Report's guide to America's best colleges.” Canty said that he became sold on Tennessee State during his visit. “The atmosphere of the campus just fits me,” Canty said. “There are 11,000 students enrolled there and I think I can fit in very well.” One would think that there would be a certain element of culture shock for someone from a small town like Great Falls moving to a big city like Nashville. Canty said that was not the case. “I'll adapt to the city life, or the country-city life anyway,” Canty said. Medina said the whole family planned to go see as many of Canty's games as possible, no matter what it took. Even though she'll be at most of his games, she said it would still be tough not having him around the house. No matter how big he is, Medina said, Canty will always be her little boy. “I couldn't sleep last night I was so excited,” Medina said. “Then when I thought about him not being here, I sat down and cried. I guess I have to let him go, though.” Canty said that Tennessee State coach James Webster told him that he would have a chance to play and even start as a freshman. He said that Webster is not a big fan of redshirting players and that with the team having gone 2-9 in 2005, the best players will play. “I just have to take care of business,” said Canty, who said he will pick a major in the near future. As it turns out, the doctor who declared that Canty would be a midget all those years ago was doubly wrong. Not only is Canty a big man, but soon he'll be a big man on campus as well.
